Cedar Cladding

Natural Timber Cladding

Artisan Timber and Flooring can provide a range of natural timber cladding products that are visually pleasing, economic, durable and environmentally sound.

Most of our timber cladding is FSC or PEFC certified from well managed forests and Western Red Cedar and Siberian Larch have proven to be durable external cladding materials well suited for use in the UK climate.

Other hardwood species used for cladding include European Oak , European Sweet Chestnut , and sustainable exotic Brazilian hardwoods such as Cumaru, Massaranduba and Red Louro.

Artisan Timber can offer a large choice of cladding sizes and profiles, or alternatively we will machine profiles to your own pattern. A variety of brochures covering our Cedar cladding are available below. Fire Treatments to Class 1 and Class O spread of flame are available on request together with free technical advice from our sales office.

Cedar Cladding (Thuja plicata)

Western Red CedarWestern Red Cedar is a prime material for exterior cladding. With the vogue for natural materials never greater, it can enhance the exterior of any buildings aesthetic quality whilst at the same time offering technical & practical benefits.

W.R. Cedar has a natural resistance to decay and insect attack. It seasons over time for a beautiful character.

Cedar offers superb acoustic qualities to help reduce noise or confine it to specific areas. Its thermal insulation properties are also very impressive.

Cedar can be left untreated to turn an attractive silvery grey patina or can carry pigmented finishes.

Uses

Western red cedar is one of the most durable softwoods available in quantity, but being light in weight it is suitable only for uses where there is little structural need. It is seen most commonly as vertical cladding and weatherboarding, and is popular for garden buildings and greenhouses as well as a deck covering. It is used, especially in America, for roofing shingles, and lower grade timber is used in America for posts and piles.

Siberian Larch (Larix Siberia)

Siberian Larch is a natural timber cladding imported from Russian forests that combines the strength of hardwoods like English Oak with a pleasing warm colour. It can achieve FSC certification and has similar characteristics in terms of density and durability as most hardwoods.

Siberian Larch, which is harvested over a 580 million acre forest area of which half of the area is Larch trees, is also incredibly impact resistant and offers excellent service life and life expectancy.

Despite its incredible performance properties, Siberian Larch is up to 30% cheaper than traditional cladding solutions providing both quality and value for money. Like Cedar it will weather to a silvery grey colour or it can be stained or painted.

Offering both cladding and fascia options, Siberian Larch is ideal for projects where strength, sustainability and environmental considerations are paramount.

Certified Hardwood Cladding

Here at Artisan Timber we can supply a wide range of certified hardwood claddings with species including Cumaru, Massaranduba, Red Louro & Greenheart from Southern America. European Oak, a traditionally strong durable hardwood in a variety of grades. For the various cladding profiles please see the downloadable specifications below.

Structural hardwoods are an ideal choice for cladding applications due to their high resistance to rot & decay. Tropical hardwoods such as Greenheart & Massaranduba have a high resistance to rot & marine borers making them highly suitable for any job where the timber is in contact with water, whereas Oak is ideal for timber framed houses and street furniture.

Modified Timber Cladding

Thermowood 'D' Pine

Thermowood offers the beauty, long-term performance and versatility of any traditional cladding while at the same time making a substantial cost saving of around 30% compared to other timber cladding products.

Thermowood has a service life of 30 years making it the most durable, cost effective and environmentally friendly timber cladding product.

Thermowood is not treated with chemicals which makes it a fantastic option for the ‘green’ builder. It is specially kiln dried at extremely high temperatures to reduce moisture content. The product has a dramatically high tolerance to extreme temperature. The heat treatment process also stops seepage as it rids the timber of any resin.

Cedar Shingles

What are the qualities of Western Red Cedar shingles?

Cedar ShinglesWestern Red Cedar has thin sapwood which is of a light yellow tinge. The heartwood varies considerably in colour from pinkish red to a deep warm brown. The wood is straight grained and splits readily and uniformly.

The natural oil in the wood encourages water to run off instead of soaking into the wood. This natural oil also helps keep the shingle flexible preventing the shingles from splitting despite wide fluctuations in humidity and temperature year after year. In addition, Western Red Cedar has a natural resistance to rot owing to high resin content.

How do we use Western Red Cedar shingles today?

Blue Label ShingleToday cedar shingles are cut to length and thickness from the best part of the tree, the heartwood. Shingles are sawn flat on both faces which distinguishes them from shakes which are split along the grain. Wood shingles come in lengths of 16 in., 18 in. or 24 in. and taper along their length. The exposed ends called butts are uniformly thick for each category of shingle.

Cedar shingles are typically three or four times as expensive as asphalt shingles but they give a historic appearance and texture that cannot be attained with modern products.

Although other wood shingles are available at lower prices, the longer durability of the western red cedar shingles will outweigh any initial saving on a different product.
