Solid wood, engineered wood and laminate flooring general questions
Do you send free samples? If so, how do I get them?

Yes! We send upto 3 free samples. You can add samples to your basket or request them through contacting us by using our enquiry form, calling us or if available our live chat option.
Will the flooring be exactly as the sample?

A sample represents a small part of the flooring so it will give you a good idea of the tones, grade and general look of the floor. We recommend looking at pictures of the floor and if you still aren’t sure then ordering one pack to see if you like it before you purchase the full amount.

If you are local to Aylesbury, Bucks then why not see if we have a large sample board in our showroom and book an appointment to visit us? Contact us using this form, calling or if available our live chat.
Deciding on a floor & working out how much you need
What's the difference between laminate, engineered and solid wood flooring?

Laminate flooring is usually cheaper than both engineered and solid flooring due to it not containing any REAL wood. Laminate floorings structure consists of high-density fibreboard usually around 10mm thick finished by ‘printing’ a picture of wood floor to give the appearance of real wood. Many laminates are water resistant and so are good choices for bathrooms, utilities and kitchens.
Engineered wood flooring consists of a ply base finished with a veneer of solid wood usually from 3-6mm. Most wood floors are engineered due to less problems with moisture and temperature and an easier production & installation process. Generally you can sand down a 4mm engineered wood floor 2-3 times in it’s life and most of our products come with a 20 year warranty from the manufacturer.

Solid wood is cut from one piece of wood and does not consist of a ply base like engineered, its real solid wood throughout. Be careful with moisture as it acts like a sponge, expanding and contracting more than engineered wood floor. You can generally sand down a solid wood floor more times than an engineered wood floor depending on where the tongue and groove are placed on the planks.
Is lacquered or oiled better?

Lacquered is a modern day varnish which acts as a film over the surface of the timber. Best used for high-traffic areas such as restaurants and schools. Offered in a range of finishes lacquer can produce an ultra-shiny finish if desired.

Oiled floors are different in the way that the oil is absorbed into the wood opposed to sitting on top of the timber like a lacquer. Best suited to residential, low traffic areas for example hallways, living rooms, bedrooms etc. Often made from natural resources and results in a natural yet rich matt finish.
How do you measure your room?

Using a tape measure, measure each side of the room. Try and split the room into rectangles as this makes it easier. For example an L shaped room could be split into two rectangle areas. As you are doing this draw a basic outline with a pen and paper. Multiple the width by length to get the area of the room.
We are working on a more in depth article to help you do this.
How much wastage do I need?

For standard wood plank flooring we recommend 10% wastage.
For Herringbone & Chevron we recommend 15% for wastage.

Always check how much wastage your fitter recommends!

Consider the shape of your rooms too, the more complex with loads of turns, kitchen islands, stairs etc the more wastage you will require.
Preparing my subfloor
How do I prepare my subfloor?
  • Check with your underfloor heating manufacture and the flooring manufacturer to see if your floor is compatible with their system
  • Make sure the subfloor is level and use a level tool to check
  • Consider the type of latex used, anhydrite or?
  • Check the moisture content and use a damp proof membrane if required
  • Make sure the area is clear of loose debris

There is more to subfloor preparation than these points so always check with your fitter, the manufacturer or us for further help.

Here are some useful installation guides that go into more depth:

What Our Customers Say About Us

  • review rating 5  All I can say is brilliant, the entire service provided by artisan timber is fantastic. This is everything from the range of natural oak floor types they have on offer, all the way to the completed installation. The communication and survey was quick and helpful, quotation was fair and most importantly my new living room floor looks fantastic. ( I was so impressed I've decided to get my entire downstairs re-done) Would highly recommend!!

  • review rating 5  Artisan Timber & Flooring service was top class, from start to finish. They genuinely wanted me to be happy, down to the fine details. When Kevin came to survey the work –wooden flooring to replace a carpet in a very large bedroom—he really seemed interested in helping me choose a type of plank that was not just suitable but transformed the room. His quote for Ted Todd wood flooring along with installation was competitive and turned out to be excellent value for money. He also followed up every step of the way. For example, when the wood supplier mixed up scheduling of my delivery, Kevin persuaded them to make it up to me by sending the order by courier that same evening. The wood arrived soon after 6 p.m., and as a bonus, without prompting or complaint, the driver carried 8 heavy boxes of wood up two flights of stairs to my flat. The fitter was professional, pleasant, and meticulous, his installation did justice to the quality of the wood. Additionally, all the Artisan staff I spoke with on the phone were pleasant and helpful. It may sound corny, but this was one of the best “retail experiences” I have had, easily comparable to the high standards of Harrods when I ordered living and dining room furniture years ago.

  • review rating 5  Great company to do business with. I used to be in the trade many years ago so I know good when I see it. Customer service from Joe was exceptional. Second time I have used them this year and will do so in the future. Give them a try, carpets or wooden flooring in my case, they won’t be beaten on price. Price is important but the overall service is to be admired. Thank you guys 👍
