With over 20 years of experience and thousands of happy customers
Artisan Timber & Flooring is a local specialist in providing a professional wood flooring renovation service at competitive prices with workmanship guaranteed for one year.

After years of neglect, wooden floorboards or parquet blocks can become heavily worn, scratched or punctured by gripper rods or obscured by layers of wax and polish. Complete re-sanding and coating of timber floors is often required when they are accidentally scratched by kids, careless tradesmen and delivery men.
Or maybe you want to change the look of your floor? We can stain your floor to one of a range of standard colours prior to oiling or varnish.

We follow best practices, keep up to date with the flooring industry news and provide expert advice to prevent problems arising. Read below for more information and examples.

How Does it Work?

Artisan Timber and Flooring will undertake your entire floor restoration project using the following procedures

Step 1

Survey & Estimate Preparation

The first step is to calculate the length of time and materials needed.
Please fill out our enquiry form on this page so that we can give you a provisional estimate. If you are happy with our initial quote we will come out and survey and then confirm a final price

Step 2

Getting ready for the renovation process

Before the renovation starts all furniture and fabrics  should be removed from the rooms being restored. It's best that cupboards and doors are taped up. If required we will fix down or replace any loose or broken planks, blocks or cork strip.

We are now ready to floor sanding operation where we will start by using a coarse grit to remove the worst mark from the floor then gradually work our way down through medium and fine grit sanding belts.

You can choose to stain your floor a new colour or simply finish it with lacquer or oil (more information on step 3).

We primarily offer Osmo and ‘Morells stains’ and oils, please see this link for ideas:

Step 3

Finishes and Seals

After the wooden floor has been sanded, it needs to be protected with a wood floor seal. The two most popular types of finish are lacquers and hardwax oils. Some people might call lacquer floor varnish, but technically varnish is only one type of wood floor seal. The quality of the seals that goes onto your floor is perhaps the most important part of the entire sanding process and commercial seals will be far more durable than those used in the domestic environment.

We only use the top quality lacquers to protect the finished wood, offering a stain resistant durable finish that should, with the correct maintenance, last years.

Hardwax oils provide a more traditional floor finish that retain the natural character of the wood whilst increasing its durability as well as water and dirt resistance. Floor oils are available in the matt, satin-matt or semi-matt finishes, with the main advantage of being that the floors coated can be patch repaired when damaged as opposed to lacquered floors that need entirely re-sanding and finishing.  Generally two coats are applied and a range of coloured oils are available.

As long as you take good care of the floor and under normal domestic traffic conditions typical re-coating times:

A part acryllic seal should last 3+ years
A high traffic seal should last 5+ years
An oil will need touching up once every one to two years.
These timings are approximate and depend on the volume of traffic and the type of shoes that go over the floor. If you really want your floors to last you might consider making the house a shoe free zone!

Recoating times will vary dependent of the location. For instance, a hall may need re-coating yearly whereas a bedroom may only need refreshing every 3 or 4 years.

Does the sanding process generate much dust?

Most of the dust is extracted using our dust free machines but the edge sanding can generate some dust. This is fully hoovered up before we can apply any lacquers or oils so there are no traces of dust.

What are the drying times?

Lacquers can be gently walked on after a few hours but do not fully cure for around 72 hours or so.
Oils take longer to dry especially in humid conditions so it can take upto 2-3 days to dry fully.
